Question: Why do people have their dog's ears cut? I think it is cruel! Answer: Some people (owners of certain breeds such as Great Danes, Dobermans, Boxers, Mastifs) often experience difficulty with the health of their dog's ears when they are not cut. The dog's ears are too big for the dog's head and greatly reduce the air circulation inside the ear. This causes infections when dirt gets in. Cutting the ears at an age no later than 3 months will almost eliminate the chances of infections later in the future. Some breeds of dogs cannot have their ears cut because they are too long, such as Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Lhasa Apsos. These breeds will tend to experience more ear infections. Owners of these dogs will be required to clean the ears every day to avoid infection. |

Question: My dog eats too fast and tends to vomit a couple of minutes afterward. Is there a way to stop this from happening? Answer: There are special bowls that you can buy at you local pet store that have built in blocks that make your dog work to get a few pieces at a time. A more economical way of preventing your dog from eating too quickly would be to put big objects into the his bowl along with his food. This will make him need to move things around in the bowl to be able to get the food. Make sure that your dog cannot swallow the objects that you put into his food bowl. This will amost eliminate the vomitting. If by chance the vomitting continues, you should consult you veterinarian. |

Question: My neighbor had his dog's dew claws surgically removed. What is the reason for this? Answer: Dew claws, the thumbs, often cause health problems in dogs when the owner does not have his/her dog's claws trimmed on a regular basis. As a dog runs and plays outside, all of the dog's claws are naturally getting trimmed except for the dew claws. These claws don't touch the ground when the dog is playing outside or digging and thus the claws will grow at a faster rate than the other claws. Dog owners will tend to wait longer periods of time before having their dog's claws trimmed. The dew claws sometimes curl around into the dog's leg. If this happens, the dew claws will need to be removed by a veterinarian. |

Did you know that terriers are dogs that are bred to dig? This makes it almost impossible to prevent them from digging! A possible solution to this problem may be to teach your dog to dig in a designated area by making it fun for him to dig up treats in the area and unpleasant to dig up dog poop or chicken fence in the areas that are considered off limits. |
